Generous donation by Deepthika Jayakody kickstarts Equine Hospital
The leading owner over the recent April Horse Racing festival in Nuwara Eliya Ms Deepthika Jayakody in a display of generosity seldom seen on a racecourse has donated SLRs 3,000,000 to the Royal Turf Club for the construction of a much needed Equine Hospital. Ms Jayakody has further pledged that any future prizemoney earned from her runners will be donated to the RTC until the hospital is completed.
Ms Jayakody, who passionate about the welfare of horses and was the driving forced behind the RTC enlisting the Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency to conduct sampling of horses at the races, saw the requirement for an Equine Hospital following the fall of Charlatan in the Governor’s Cup on 30th April. When asked about Charlatan Ms Jayakody said “I am taking professional medical advice from the best Equine Veterinarians in India.”
She added that it is pleasing to see the RTC moving quickly on this project as Dr Hasneyn Mirza came to Nuwara Eliya to advise the Club on the best site and a design for the Equine Hospital. On behalf of the club he is sourcing the most modern equipment for the care of horses. The owners of local pony population will also benefit as a full time Veterinarian will be on course to advise and assist with any concerns.
